New policy to boost India's aviation sector

Development of regional airports in the district headquarters has been facing several hurdles in the state, for example construction of an airport in Shivamogga was recently shelved citing financial issues, the Bengaluru-Mysuru air link were resumed recently after years of delay, and the Bidar airport project is a non-starter. But all the might change soon as a new aviation policy is likely to boost regional airtravels in the country.
Giving a rosy picture on the civil aviation sector in the country, secretary of civil aviation ministry RN Choubey said the proposed civil aviation policy would scale up India's global ranking from the current 9th to 3rd in terms of air passengers over the next five years.
The secretary, who was addressing delegates from the aviation sector in the backdrop of 5th edition of India Aviation-2016 to be in Hyderabad from March 16- 20 next year, said India had an edge over other advanced countries and urged industries to choose India as their favourite destination for investment.
The policy would give a boost for the development and operations of 400 airports and airstrips across the country. Two hundred new destinations would be added to regional operations.
"In the country, there is a potential to develop 400 airports and airstrips, some of them were even developed during the Second World War. The new policy would focus on these areas and regional flying is a money-spinner. If the government gave subsidies to investors for a period of 10 years, the cost of the operations could be brought down to a great extent. The middle income group in the country which could travel at least once a year. That would add over 300 million air-passengers in five years," the secretary said.
